Well it’s obviously not quite game over for Google yet, but figures from Experian/Hitwise suggest that Facebook recently had its first full week where traffic exceeded that for Google. Facebook’s traffic figures year on year are also still showing strong increases, with Facebook’s traffic up by 185%, opposed to Google’s 9%. It has to be stated that these are figures for the US.
This is occuring at a time when marketeers are once again re-evaluating Facebook as an advertising platform, and there seems to be as much buzz about it as there was when it first starting expanding its potential audience. I have argued previously the on an impression by impression basis, Facebook traffic is in my opinion of markedly less value than that of Google’s. Having said that the continuing growth of traffic is an incredible achievement, and I am sure that the story of Facebook marketing is one we’ll become increasingly familiar with in the months ahead.
